personia on "Permalinks completely ruined"

I've suddenly run into the trouble with permalinks. WIth default setting, my posts links work, though custom setting returns this page when attempting to load a post:

Not Found

The requested URL /taking-the-leap was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache Server at ponderthat.net Port 80

-------

It suddenly appeared today and I've spent HOURS trying to fix it. I've disabled plugins and flushed htaccess. I also suddenly discovered that Wordpress asked for FTP credential each time I went to install plugin. My original intent was to install a new theme, which seemed to work and a new plugin - aswell as update (but didn't update plugin since I found it a hassle with the credidentials). I've stripped my theme back to defualt without my issue resolved. Don't know if these issues are even related.

My friend says my permalinks are completely damaged and there isn't a thing I can do, so this is my last resort.

I can provide htaccess (that I've written over several times) if needed.

Thanks in advance.
